Move Beyond the Shape — Understand the Body Behind the Pose

With Carole Cousineau & Tanya Brasseur

Advanced yoga is not simply about performing more difficult postures.

It is about developing the knowledge, awareness and skill to understand how the body moves, why the same posture can feel completely different from one person to another, and how to intelligently progress a practice without forcing the body into a predetermined shape.

This comprehensive 40-hour training brings together advanced āsana practice and applied anatomy, allowing yoga teachers to explore more complex postures while developing a deeper understanding of biomechanics, joint movement, muscular engagement, mobility, stability and individual anatomical differences.

Rather than studying anatomy as an abstract collection of bones and muscles, you will learn to see anatomy in movement and immediately apply that understanding to your own practice and teaching.

What limits a student's backbend? What does the shoulder need to do in an arm balance? Why can one practitioner comfortably access a posture that another may never perform in exactly the same way? When is greater flexibility useful—and when is strength and stability more important?

Throughout this training, anatomy becomes a practical tool for observing, understanding, adapting and teaching movement more intelligently.

BEYOND “CORRECT” ALIGNMENT

Traditional alignment principles can provide useful guidance, but human bodies are not identical.

Bone proportions, joint structure, mobility, strength, previous injuries and movement history all influence how a posture looks and feels.

This training encourages teachers to move beyond rigid ideas of what a posture is supposed to look like and instead understand its functional intention.

You will learn to ask:

What is this posture asking the body to do?
Where is the movement actually coming from?
What requires mobility—and what requires stability?
What is limiting the posture?
And is this variation appropriate for this particular body?

The goal is not to make every student look the same.

The goal is to understand each body well enough to help practitioners explore their potential with intelligence, awareness and respect for their individual anatomy.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

The training explores:

  • Applied anatomy specifically for yoga teachers

  • Functional anatomy and biomechanics in āsana

  • Individual skeletal and anatomical variation

  • Understanding joint movement and range of motion

  • The relationship between mobility, flexibility, strength and stability

  • Active versus passive range of motion

  • Muscular engagement within yoga postures

  • Recognizing compensation patterns

  • Understanding where movement is actually occurring

  • Joint stability and intelligent loading

  • Preparing the body for more demanding postures

  • Progressive approaches to advanced āsanas

  • Building the strength and mobility required for deeper practice

  • Using props and modifications intelligently

  • Understanding when and how to progress a posture

  • Sequencing toward advanced postures

  • Observing and adapting postures for different bodies

  • Teaching advanced practice without creating pressure or competition

  • Developing clearer anatomical and movement-based cues

  • Integrating advanced āsanas appropriately into regular yoga classes

EXPLORING ADVANCED ĀSANAS

Rather than treating an advanced posture as a final shape to achieve, we break it down into its individual components.

What needs to move?
What needs to stabilize?
What needs to strengthen?
What preparatory postures are useful?
And what alternatives can provide a similar experience when the full posture is not appropriate?

Through this approach, advanced postures become laboratories for understanding movement and anatomy rather than tests of flexibility or athletic ability.

The training explores advanced posture families such as:

  • Arm balances

  • Inversions

  • Backbends

  • Hip-opening postures

  • Advanced balances

  • Twists and binds

  • Strength-based postures and transitions

  • Progressive variations of familiar āsanas

The emphasis throughout remains on progression rather than performance.

ANATOMY YOU CAN ACTUALLY USE

Many yoga teachers studied anatomy during their foundational training but still find it difficult to translate that knowledge into practical teaching.

Knowing the name of a muscle is helpful.

Understanding what that muscle is doing in a posture, how it interacts with the surrounding joints and how that knowledge changes the way you teach is much more powerful.

This training bridges that gap.

You will develop the ability to observe movement, understand what you are seeing and use anatomical knowledge to make practical teaching decisions—whether helping an experienced student explore an advanced posture or finding a more appropriate variation of a familiar one.

ADVANCED DOESN'T MEAN EXTREME

An advanced practice is not defined by how deeply someone can stretch, whether they can balance on their hands or how complicated their postures look.

An advanced practitioner develops awareness, control, adaptability and discernment.

Sometimes progress means increasing mobility.

Sometimes it means developing strength or stability.

Sometimes it means approaching a familiar posture in an entirely new way.

And sometimes the most advanced choice is recognizing that a particular expression of a posture is simply not appropriate for your body.

This training encourages curiosity over achievement, progression over performance and understanding over imitation.

WHO IS THIS TRAINING FOR?

This training is ideal for:

  • Certified yoga teachers wishing to deepen their understanding of anatomy and movement

  • Teachers wanting greater confidence teaching advanced āsanas

  • Teachers who want to move beyond memorized alignment cues

  • Teachers interested in functional anatomy and individual anatomical variation

  • Yoga teachers wishing to improve sequencing and preparation for challenging postures

  • Experienced yoga practitioners wishing to deepen their understanding of their own bodies and practice

Whether you teach Hatha, Vinyasa, Flow or another movement-based style, this training will give you practical tools to see the body differently, teach more intelligently and approach advanced practice with greater confidence and awareness.

Continuing Education Course Information

Language
Whenever all participants share a common language, the course will be taught in that language. Otherwise, the course will be offered bilingually in English and French. Académie Om course manuals are available in both languages, and students may complete their assignments, homework and examinations in either English or French.

Prerequisites and Diploma Eligibility
Our Continuing Education courses are open to everyone, whether for professional development or personal enrichment. Participants who already hold a 200-hour yoga teacher certification will receive a Continuing Education diploma upon successfully completing the course. Those who are not yet certified yoga teachers are still welcome to participate for their personal knowledge and development. If they later complete a Yoga Alliance–recognized 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training—at Académie Om or another registered school—they may provide proof of certification and request the diploma for any Continuing Education courses they previously completed with us.

Individual courses may have additional prerequisites when specific experience or prior training is required. Any such requirements will be indicated on the corresponding course page.

Yoga Alliance Continuing Education
Académie Om is a Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (YACEP). Eligible courses may be counted toward the continuing education requirements of teachers registered with Yoga Alliance.

Attendance Policy
Regular attendance is essential because much of the learning is experiential and cannot be fully replaced through independent study. A limited number of absences for valid reasons may be accommodated. However, students who miss essential teachings or multiple sessions may be required to complete one or more private make-up sessions at a rate of $100 per hour before their diploma can be issued. Please contact us as early as possible if you anticipate missing any portion of your course.

Refund Policy
In the event of withdrawal, a $100 administrative fee will apply, in addition to the prorated tuition corresponding to the portion of the in-person course that has already taken place. For example, if a student withdraws after completing one of four scheduled sessions, 25% of the total tuition will remain payable, in addition to the $100 administrative fee. These fees help cover transaction and administrative costs and recognize that a reserved place may have prevented another student from enrolling. This policy allows us to treat all participants fairly.
