Manual Lymphatic Drainage

This course introduces massage therapists to the principles and techniques of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), with an emphasis on the approach developed by Dr. Albert Leduc.

Building upon the pioneering work of Dr. Emil Vodder and subsequent developments in lymphatic therapy, including the contributions of Michael Földi, the Leduc approach combines precise manual techniques with a strong understanding of lymphatic anatomy, physiology, and clinical reasoning.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage uses gentle, rhythmic, and specifically directed movements designed to support the natural movement of lymphatic fluid. The Leduc approach places particular emphasis on the pressure, rhythm, direction, and sequencing of techniques, as well as their appropriate adaptation according to the client's presentation.

The training combines theoretical understanding with hands-on practice, allowing participants to develop both the knowledge and sensitivity required to perform MLD safely and effectively.

Participants will:

• Learn the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system

• Understand the role of the lymphatic system in fluid balance, circulation, and immune function

• Learn the indications, precautions, and contraindications associated with Manual Lymphatic Drainage

• Develop precision in the pressure, rhythm, direction, and sequencing of lymphatic techniques

• Learn practical MLD techniques and protocols for different regions of the body

• Understand how treatment sequences can be adapted according to the client's individual needs

• Develop the palpatory sensitivity and quality of touch required for effective lymphatic work

• Explore the principles behind movement, positioning, and sequential stimulation as complements to manual techniques

This training provides massage therapists with a solid foundation for incorporating Manual Lymphatic Drainage into their professional practice. It is particularly relevant for therapists wishing to broaden their therapeutic skills and better understand how massage therapy can support lymphatic circulation, appropriate forms of edema, and recovery following certain surgical procedures, while recognizing when a client's condition requires assessment or treatment by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
